FIRST STEPS
WHAT IS ECHO?
ECHO Eclipse at the Lake, hosted by the ECHO Leahy Center for Lake Champlain, is a three-day celebration of the total solar eclipse, held April 8-10, 2024, at Burlington’s Waterfront Park. Set against the stunning backdrop of Lake Champlain, the event features food, rides, assorted vendors, interactive exhibits, and educational talks. Designed for all ages, it combines fun, learning, and community connection while promoting sustainability and supporting local businesses.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
For this project, the client wanted us to design promotional materials for ECHO Eclipse at the Lake, as well as create a UI for a functioning app that guests could use. We handled advertising through social media and the local paper, and created merchandise and accompanying assets like pamphlets and eclipse-viewing glasses.
MY ROLE
I served as the main UI/UX designer and assisted with the branding process. I created the main sitemap and formulated wireframes to assist with later development. I also designed the initial pages and fully prototyped them to set the stage for later work. Alongside my team, I helped make decisions on color palette and typeface.
PROCESS
COLOR & TYPE
Since this event was meant to be held outdoors, our team wanted to capture the colors of both Burlington, Vermont, and the Eclipse. We focused on warm colors to represent the sun and vibrant trees of Vermont, then grounded the warm colors with a dark green, reminiscent of Vermont's mountains and land. We also ended up using three different typefaces. We wanted the logo to look like it belonged on a patch since the event was set to be held in a national park.
WIREFRAMES
The client initially only wanted a very basic prototype of an app. They had not yet decided if they were fully committed to creating one and would make the final choice once I presented the basic prototype. As a result, I wanted each screen to showcase the strengths of having an app for the event, I also wanted the screens to be easily adaptable to a website. With this in mind, my initial pages included a basic home screen, an FAQ tab, and an itinerary for the day.
